What is a workplace stress

Workplace stress is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is a conflict between job demands on the employee and the amount of control an employee has over meeting these demands. 

Workplace stress can be connected with psychosocial hazards in the workplace. Some examples of workplace stress hazards leading risks are: 

1. Excessive workloads

2. repetitive work, poorly managed organizational change,  and job insecurity

3. ineffective communication, lack of support from management or  colleagues, and poor work design

4. aggressive or abusive behavior, including bullying and violence at the workplace. 

Indicators of workplace stress:

1. a feeling of constant anxiety

2. difficulty concentrating

3. mood swings, irritability, or having a short temper

4. depression and low self-esteem

5. muscle tension, pains, and headaches. 

6. loss of appetite. 

7. gets cold more often. 


Identify stress at workplace:

1. Change in employees normal behaviour-eg irritability, withdrawal, unpredictability behaviour

2. Change in their appearance

3. sudden lack of concentration, commitment 

4. Absenteeism. 

Manage Workplace stress: 

1. encourage open communication

2. offer mental and physical health benefits.

bring in meditation classes

3. offer paid time off

4. encourage employees to take breaks 

5. bring dome diversions into the office.

6. consider flexible work schedules.
